A foundation for Inviting Light was in no small part Signal Station North, a community engagement initiative undertaken by The Neighborhood Design Center from 2019 to 2021 and designed to discover the most effective approaches to urban lighting and sustainability in Station North.

The Signal Station North Lighting Guidebook was one of four publications to come out of the planning and advocacy work of the project. It’s a valuable resource for anyone wishing to learn how light impacts the livability of public space and how individuals and neighbors can improve the lighting in your own neighborhood.

  • A Step-by-Step Neighborhood Lighting Guide
  • Grants & Funding Resources for Lighting Projects
  • Case studies and writings on the history of urban lighting

By sharing the guide here as well as a link to the SSL website with its additional resources, we hope to share this foundational work broadly with our Baltimore community in hopes it inspires future lighting projects, large and small, to improve our nighttime environment.
